Before fresh dog food was a trend, we were already doing it… one dog at a time, one custom diet at a time.
For more than two decades, I’ve dedicated my life to one simple mission:
helping dogs live healthier, happier lives through truly personalized nutrition.
Long before “fresh dog food” became mainstream, I was in my kitchen working one-on-one with dog owners; testing, refining, and perfecting real diets for real dogs.
Where My Knowledge Comes From
My path into canine nutrition didn’t start in a kitchen, it started in veterinary medicine.
I spent nearly a decade working as a veterinary technician, where I saw firsthand the health challenges dogs face and how often nutrition played a role in those outcomes. During that time, I was also deeply involved in animal rescue, caring for dogs and cats with a wide range of conditions, backgrounds, and needs.
That experience shaped my understanding in a way textbooks alone never could.
When I decided to build Paws Café, I knew I wanted to do this the right way. So I combined my real-world experience with formal education and deep research:
- I completed nutrition certification courses (at the time, human-based, as canine programs didn’t yet exist)
- I studied the Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats cover to cover
- I researched the connections between nutrition and disease extensively; focusing on how diet could support better long-term health outcomes
At the same time, I built a comprehensive nutrition database just for dogs. Something I’ve continued refining for over 20 years.
This foundation, clinical experience, formal study, and hands-on application, is what guides every recommendation I make today.
Where It All Began
Before opening my first location, I spent nearly two years conducting in-home feeding trials with local families.
Each week, I would:
- Prepare a fully customized diet for their dog
- Deliver it fresh to their door
- Sit down with the owner to review progress
- Adjust and refine the next week’s meals
Each program lasted at least 8 weeks and only ended when both the dog and owner were happy that we’d found a good diet plan.
That hands-on experience shaped everything I do today.
Building Something Different
In 2007, I built the first Paws Café. It was one of the first (if not the first) retail locations in the U.S. dedicated to fresh, homemade cooked meals for dogs.
It wasn’t just a store… it was an experience.
Customers could:
- Let their dogs play in a dedicated puppy area
- Relax in a lounge-style retail space
- Watch our team prepare their dog’s food in a commercial kitchen behind a glass wall
Those daily conversations with dog owners gave me invaluable insight into the real challenges people face when trying to feed their dogs well.
Growing With Purpose
What started as a passion quickly grew into something much bigger.
We expanded into a larger commercial kitchen in 2013 and began delivering fresh, customized meals to over 500 homes each month. We worked closely with veterinarians and regularly received referrals from clinics who trusted our approach.
As demand grew beyond our local area, I created our DIY Canine Meal Kits. The kits made it possible for dog owners everywhere to prepare fresh food at home without sacrificing proper nutrition.
A Family Mission
About 15 years ago, my husband John joined me in this journey.
From the beginning, he believed in what we were building and has been a constant source of support ever since. Whether behind the scenes or stepping in wherever needed, John has always had my back; helping turn this passion into something sustainable and lasting.
Cooking4Canines isn’t just a business… It’s a life we’ve built together.
Evolving With Our Customers
In 2019, we moved our operation to our ranch in Darby, Montana, where we built our third commercial kitchen.
Not long after that, Covid changed everything.
As costs for ingredients and shipping surged, many of our customers needed a more sustainable option. So we adapted just like we always have.
We expanded our Meal Kit options by offering our nutrient packs separately. K9 Food Essentials nutrients gives dog owners the ability to:
- Use ingredients they already trust
- Customize diets even further
- Ensure balanced nutrition without guesswork
Today, our focus is helping you feed your dog better, without relying on expensive shipped meals.

From Our Ranch to Your Home
Today, Cooking4Canines operates from our Montana ranch that’s home to our three golden retrievers (Goldie, Charlie & Remington) miniature highlands, donkeys, horses, and valais blacknose sheep.
